Lindal Cedar Homes Celebrates 60 Years
Sixty years ago, Lindal Cedar Homes was founded by Sir Walter Lindal in Toronto, Ontario.
Lindal Cedar Homes 60 year milestones include:
- 1945 - At the age of 26, Sir Walter Lindal leaves the Canadian Army following WWII to start his own home manufacturing company in Toronto, Canada.
- 1946 - Lindal joins the International Prefabricated Homes Institute of America, today called the Building Systems Council of the National Association of Homebuilders. Over the years, Sir Walter served four terms on its board.
- 1948 - First independent dealer opens an office in Hamilton, Ontario.
- 1962 - Sir Walter Lindal makes his breakthrough move to the cedar country of Vancouver, British Columbia.
- 1962 - Sir Walter Lindal receives his first patent, for the "Ranch Plank."
- 1963 - Lindal begins to establish a dealer network across America and makes its first shipments to Europe.
- 1966 - Lindal headquarters moves to the United States; the company's patented A-frame hits the cover of Popular Mechanics, bringing national fame to the growing company.
- 1967 - Lindal makes its first shipments to Japan.
- 1971 - Lindal goes public; international headquarters established in Seattle, Washington.
- 1972 - Lindal builds its own sawmill in Surrey, British Columbia.
- 1981 - Robert Lindal, son of Sir Walter Lindal, becomes President and CEO; Sir Walter moves up to Chairman of the Board and Director of Research and Development.
- 1982 - Lindal Cedar Homes adds sunrooms and room additions to its product line.
- 1983 - Acquisition of Justus Homes adds the log home market to the Lindal product line.
- 1986 - The Home Manufacturers Council of the National Association of Home Builders honors Sir Walter Lindal as its first Man of the Year.
- 1988 - Lindal further commits to the sunroom and room addition market by acquiring Northern Sun Company.
- 1988 - Lindal named a Top 100 Best Small Growth Company by Business Week Magazine.
- 1995 - Douglas Lindal, son of Sir Walter Lindal, becomes President; Sir Walter is named Chairman Emeritus/Founder.
- 1994 - Lindal launches its first website, www.lindal.com
- 2000 - President Douglas Lindal retires. Robert Lindal resumes the role of President and CEO.
- 2001 - Lindal again becomes a private company, owned by the five Lindal family members.
- 2002 - Lindal is approached by Target and award-winning architect Michael Graves to join forces to design and build the Club Wedd sweepstakes home.
- 2004 - Grand Opening celebration of the first Cutler/Anderson designed Lindal home. Lindal now offers a series of homes available nationwide from the award-winning architectural firm.
- 2005 - January marks the beginning of the 60th Anniversary celebration. In the past 60 years, Lindal Cedar Homes is approaching 50,000 homes, earned 21 patents and countless awards in the home building industry for outstanding home designs, and for superior marketing materials such as planbooks, advertising and website design.
